Slip-Resistant Properties:

SAFETY STANDARD OF EPOXY COATINGS & TESTING

The SKID-RESISTANT properties of Armor Shield EPOXY FLOOR SYSTEMS are important for safety purposes and often must meet minimum standards.  These standards are measured using one of the following methods:

ASTM F-489 STATIC COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION OF SHOE SOLE AND HEEL MATERIALS as measured by the James Machine: Fine non-skid grit in epoxy coating.

Static Friction:
  • w/ saltwater solution on surface - 0.90 - 0.97
  • w/ oil on surface - 0.72 - 0.75
  • laboratory testing only
  • sliding friction on surface - 0.87 - 0.90
ASTM F-609 STATIC SLIP RESISTANCE OF FOOTWEAR MATERIALS as measured by Horizontal Pull Slip Meter is commonly used for on-site testing.

ARMOR SHIELD ANTI -SLIP  EPOXY FINISH - 8.0 Index

Other Testing Methods:
ASTM D-1894 Test for static and kinetic coefficient of friction of plastic films and sheeting has been recognized by one manufacturer as compliant under OSHA and ADA requirements specifying this test method for determination of product COF (coefficient of friction).

ASTM D-2047 Test method for static coefficient of friction of polish-coated floor surfaces as measured by the James Machine is the only slip-resistance test method recognized by the floor polish industry.  Laboratory testing only.

ASTM D-4518 Test for measuring static friction of coating surfaces, Method A, involves a platform containing a sled which is slowly raised until the angle of movement is reached.  Method B involves a horizontal-pull tester.

ASTM E-303 Test method of measuring surface frictional properties using the British pendulum tester – dynamic slip.

ASTM F-462-79 Consumer Safety specifications for slip-resistant bathing facilities involve the use of the Brungraber slip resistant Tester.  Conformance to the standard requires that each of nine “measurement zones” yield an average Us value of no less than 0.04.

ASTM F-1677 Testing standard is approved for dry and wet testing utilizes the Brungraber Mark II tester.

ASTM F-1678 Covers the operational procedures for using a portable articulated strut slip tester (PAST) to determine the slip resistance of footwear, sole, heel or related materials against planar walkway (aisle) surfaces.  Laboratory or on-site testing.

ASTM F-1679 Premier testing method, which avoids the problem of adhesion by applying the horizontal and vertical forces simultaneously. The English XL is used.

ASTM C-1028 Testing the static coefficient of friction of ceramic tile or other surfaces uses a large 50 lb. Sled constructed to procedure.  Laboratory or on-site testing.

ASTM D-5859 Test method covers the measurement of the traction of footwear on coated aisles, using the English XL Variable Incidence Tribometer.
